What is International Studies

Initially, international relations was a part of international studies. However, with the increasing global issues and the demand to address them accordingly, international relations was separated as a separate discipline, yet it was an inter-related discipline of international studies at the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, this resulted in the establishment of several academic associations and institutions that study international studies.

Difference Between International Studies and International Relations

International Studies (IS) is the academic discipline which emphasizes more on the social and cultural issues prevailing in different countries and their impact in the world as a whole, in addition to its studies about political relations between the countries.

Moreover, the British International Studies Association defines international studies as ‘the major political, economic, social, and cultural issues that dominate the international agenda’. Therefore, in brief, International Studies encompass all phenomena which are globally oriented.

Some of the general subjects offered in the International studies course programs are;

  • Global governance, diplomacy, global politics, and international relations

What is International Relations

International relations was studied as a part of political science, dating back to the ancient Greek times. However, after the WW2 and the birth of several International organisations such as the League of Nations and UNO, international relations was separated as a distinct discipline from political science in the late 20th century. Britain was the first to commence studying IR as a separate academic discipline.
Main Difference - International Studies vs International Relations

Accordingly, international Relations is the academic discipline which studies the relations among nations/states in the world. Hence, there is a strong sense of political science and diplomatic focus in IR. Likewise, IR scrutinizes and analyses the political interactions among these actors (both state and non-state actors) in the international stage and the tensions and issues that prevail consequently.

Subject Scope

IR is interdisciplinary in nature and blends the fields of politics, history, and economics. It, therefore, examines global issues such as

  • International law and diplomatic relations,
  • Human rights,
  • Economic stability and poverty issues,
  • Global ethics
  • Nuclear proliferation,
  • Terrorism and global security
  • Peace and conflict resolution etc.

Moreover, the most common careers in International Relations are politics and administrative sector, diplomacy, political analysis, international law, and intelligence, etc.

Relationship Between International Studies and International Relations

  • Initially, international studies was studied as a part of international relations before it was separated due to the increasing global issues and the demand to address them accordingly.
  • However, both academic disciplines focus on relations among international actors (state and non-state actors) in the international arena and their impacts. Nevertheless, international studies emphasize more on the social and cultural impacts of these relations on the countries as well when compared to international relations.
  • Career aspects for both disciplines may overlap as well.
