Difference Between Betting and Gambling - Comparison Summary

What is Betting

Betting is wagering money on the outcome of a game, race, or other unpredictable events. It is a type of gambling. Betting is typically an agreement between two parties. We call this agreement a bet or wager. Here, the one who makes an incorrect prediction about an uncertain outcome will forfeit something stipulated to the other. Two friends wagering on the outcome of an election (for instance, who will win the election – Trump or Biden) is a simple example of betting. The one who makes the incorrect prediction has to pay the agreed amount to the other party.

Sports betting is a form of betting that involves sports results, placing a wager on the outcome. There are many bets being placed on the outcome of football, hockey, basketball matches, etc. as well as sporting events like auto racing, track cycling and boxing, both at amateur and professional levels. This type of betting can also involve non-sports events like political elections and reality show contests. More interestingly, sports betting also include contests involving animals; for example, horse racing, greyhound racing, underground cockfighting (illegal), etc.

What is Gambling

Gambling is wagering of money (or something valuable) on an event with an uncertain outcome. The main intent of gambling is winning money or material goods. For gambling, there should be three elements: the amount wagered, risk/chance, and the prize. The outcome of the wager is usually immediate, for example, a spin of a roulette wheel or a single roll of dice.

Difference Between Betting and Gambling

Sports betting is one popular type of gambling. The other most popular form of gambling involves casinos. Casinos have a wide variety of games to choose from. Some of these games are easy to learn while some are more complex. Roulette, slots, blackjack and keno are games even beginners can play. Games like poker and bingo, on the other hand, need some practice and experience. In some countries, the government tend to regulate the act of gambling since it is addictive in nature and make many people spend vast amounts of money in the hope of winning.
