Mastiffs are very popular dogs worldwide and originated in Britain. They were first used as war dogs, then as estate guardians. At present these dog breeds are used as family dogs and popular for their size, behavior, and protective instincts. Among the several mastiff breeds, the most well-known are bullmastiff and English mastiff. Even though these two breeds are closely related, they do have both behavioral and physiological differences. Tha main difference between Bullmastiff and English Mastiff is that Bullmastiffs are more aggressive than English Mastiffs. Many other differences are are highlighted in this article.
Bullmastiff – Facts, Characteristics, and Behaviour
Bullmastiffs are bred by crossing old England Mastiff with Bulldog. These dogs were first used in the late 1800s to protect England’s estates from poachers. Their main job was to stay quiet until poachers approached and then take down and hold the poachers. Most poaching happened at night, hence these dogs were called Gamekeeper’s Night Dogs. The adult bullmastiffs are heavily built strong, muscular breeds. An average Bullmastiff is about 24-27 inches tall while standing and is 100-130 lbs in weight. Life expectancy is about 8-10 years. Their heads are broad with dark eyes. Ears and V-shaped and fallen down. The tail is long, and the coat is short, smooth and can be found in red or brown, with a black mask. These breeds do not need a lot of exercises as they are not bred for running. Puppies are more playful, unlike the adults. Since they are designed to protect human property, these dogs need quite a lot of training. Once they are trained, these dogs are one of the best companion dogs and love to receive rewards from their trainers. It is advisable to raise these breeds with kids, otherwise may show aggressive behave or to them. Male dogs are usually aggressive with other dogs.
English Mastiff – Facts, Characteristics, and Behaviour
English Mastiffs (Old English Mastiffs) are powerfully built dogs. Their body is massive and muscular, and they are known to be one of the heaviest breeds of dogs in the world. They have a black mask around the eyes and nose, despite the coat color, which may be tiger, silver, light brown, golden brown, dark brown or apricot. They have small dark brown eyes and small triangular shaped ears. A male dog can be 30 inches tall at the shoulder and 150-250 lbs in weight while a female dog can be 27.5 inches tall at the shoulder and 120-200 lbs in weight. Their life expectancy is 10-12 years. They do not need exercise very often, but a daily walk is recommended. These dogs are calm and can be trained to be great pets. Regardless of their size, they are very tender towards kids. These dogs rarely bark, but will protect their family without reluctance. These breeds are well known for their intelligence, loyalty, calmness, friendliness, and fearlessness.
