Main Difference – Statue vs Sculpture
The two terms statue and sculpture may look like synonyms to many people. While these two terms are related to each other, they do not mean exactly the same. A statue is a carved or cast figure of a person or animal. Sculpture is a piece of art that is made by carving or molding clay, stone, metal, etc. The term sculpture also refers to the art of carving or molding clay, stone, metal, etc. and creating figures. The main difference between statue and sculpture is that statue is always a figure of a person or an animal whereas sculpture can be either a representative or abstract figure. A sculpture that contains a human or animal figure can be termed as a statue. While all statues can be termed as sculptures, not all sculptures can be termed as statues.
What is a Statue
A statue is a carved or cast figure of a person or animal, especially one that is life-size or larger. It is usually three-dimensional representation. As mentioned above, the term statue especially applies to figures that are life size or larger; those small enough to be picked up is called a figurine or a statuette. A statue can be created by sculpturing, modeling, or casting. Some examples of famous statues include Statue of Liberty in New York, Michelangelo’s David statue in Italy, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, and the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt.
Statues have been created from prehistory to modern times in different cultures, countries for different purposes. Many statues are built to commemorate historical events or to represent influential people. Statues also have a strong relation with religion. Religious figures such as Jesus Christ, Lord Buddha, Hindu gods, and goddesses are commonly represented in statues and can be found in many religious places. In fact, the Spring Temple Buddha (128 m), located in China is the tallest statue in the world.
What is a Sculpture
The term sculpture refers to both the art of making two- or three-dimensional representative or abstract forms piece of art that is made by carving or molding clay, stone, metal, etc. and the work of art created by this process. A sculpture can be a representative figure or an abstract.The sculptures that contain animal and human figures are termed as statues.
Sculptural process originally used carving and modeling in stone, wood, metal, ceramics and other materials, in contemporary art, a wide variety of materials and processes are used in sculpture.
