Main Difference – Huawei Mate 8 vs Google Nexus 6P
The main difference between Huawei Mate 8 and Google Nexus 6P is that Huawei Mate 8 comes with a better battery capacity, larger screen, and a higher screen to body ratio whereas the Google Nexus 6P comes with a better quality display which is powered by AMOLED technology, and a better camera to go with it. The Huawei Mate 8 is Huawei’s latest smartphone which has been designed to compete with leading brands in the high-end smartphone market space. Let us take a closer look at both phones to see what they have to offer.
Huawei Mate 8 Review – Features and Specification
The Huawei Mate 8 is an impressive device from a hardware point of view. It has been mainly developed in order to compete with high-end devices produced by companies like Samsung and Apple. China-based manufacturers of mobile devices have grown leaps and bounds in the last few years, and this is one of the reasons why Google chose Huawei to make their Nexus 6P flagship device.
Design
From the previous editions of Huawei devices like the Mate S, Mate 7, Huawei P8, and Google Nexus P, it is a clear fact that the hardware of these editions has been always up to mark. The Huawei Mate 8 has seen improvements from its predecessor and the hardware is also great. The only issue that Huawei has always faced is its design language; it is causing the user experience to be weaker when compared with similar range devices.
The metal outer body design gives the device a premium look and the curves on it give it an ergonomic feel. Huawei has been an expert in designing impressively. The small bezels help the screen to be larger than those found on similar smartphone devices. This enables the phone’s screen body ratio to be higher than many other flagship phones.
The thickness of the device is 7.9mm, making it one of the slimmest phones in the market. The device is also symmetrical, and a slight curve on the rear of the device makes it a comfort in the hand. The weight of the device is 185 g, which makes it a solid a rigid device. It is worthy to note that Huawei was one of the first devices to introduce a metal back cover. This feature has been followed by its competitors. The design aspect of the phone is very impressive and is one of the key element of the phone.
Display
The display of the device is 6 inches. The design of the device enables the phone to look smaller than it actually is; thanks to some design innovation in it. The display uses Full HD resolution without going for the QHD resolution display that was with the nexus 6P. The full HD display is one of the best HD displays in the market. The pixel density of the display is 368 ppi. This is lower than the average when comparing it with similar flagship devices like Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Most users would have preferred the QHD display as many competing devices come with it. The screen is ideal for reading and viewing content. The display is easy to be seen in direct sunlight, which was not the case with previous versions. Although the latest QHD screen is not available with the device, the Full HD screen is clearer and consumes less energy thus, saving battery life.
Processor
The processor that powers the device under the hood is the long awaited Kirin 950 SoC, which is expected to compete with the processors produced by Qualcomm and Samsung. The processor is very powerful, and we can expect the device to perform fast and accurately as well. Mali-T880 GPU is able to produce graphics on par with Adreno GPU, which is the processor used in other processors.
Storage
The storage option available with the device is 32GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB. The device also supports expandable storage, which can raise the bar of the storage to up to 128 GB.
Camera
Although the previous versions of the device did not come with great cameras, the Huawei Mate 8 has improved on the camera this time. Huawei was able to produce one of the best smartphone cameras in 2015 with Honor 7 and the Nexus 6P. The Mate 8 also comes with a Sony sensor, and the rear camera comes with a 16 MP resolution camera with an aperture of f/2.0. The camera performs well in low light conditions and is equipped with optical image stabilization. The camera is also powered by phase detection autofocus which performs in 0.1 seconds. The Huawei Mate 8 is able to capture great images in low light and has options like light painting and professional mode for budding photographers. Some of the disappointments on the camera include HDR mode which does not improve the picture quality in any way and no 4k support, which is becoming a common feature in recent high-end devices.
Memory
The memory on the device is 3GB of RAM, which will enable the apps to perform without any type of lag.
Operating System
The user interface on the device has been one of the contentious parts of Huawei for many years. While some easily adjust while others find it difficult to use making user experience and convenience not great. Another issue with the interface is the fact that it has been designed specifically for Asia. Huawei is yet to introduce a westernized version of the user interface making it a clear problem from a software aspect of the device. Although the hardware of the device is great, the software is not up to the mark making the device’s user experience drop. The user interface lacks an app drawer which will be a distraction for the western users. As with many other mobile manufacturers, Huawei has also attempted to design its own user interface, and it seems as if it has failed in its task. Although this may be a drawback, there are some cool and unique features like knuckle sense and drawing a letter on the screen to launch an app.
Battery Life
The battery capacity of the device is 4000mAh. It is able to support fast charging features and has one of the highest battery capacities in the market. It is also important to note that the device does not support wireless charging. Due to an HD screen rather than a QHD screen, the battery is able to last longer.
Additional/ Special Features
The fingerprint scanner on the device is fast and accurate and is a key feature of the device. It could be said that the Huawei Mate 8 comes with the best sensors in the market as well. The device is able to support dual SIM, micro SD for expandable storage, and an NFC chipset.
Audio
The speakers have been located at the bottom of the device and the sound produced is louder but the quality of the sound needs improvement. The large capacity of the battery coupled with optimizations found on the device prolongs the battery life of the device, making it last for longer periods of time compared with other flagships in the market.
Google Nexus 6P Review – Features and Specification
The Nexus line of smartphones is specially designed to give the pure Android experience to the users. But there are reasons why the Nexus line of devices is not considered a whole package. The main aim of Google for producing this device is competing well with the flagships of its time. With the help of Huawei, was Google able to achieve its target? Let’s find out.
Design
Huawei has attempted to create a premium look for the new Nexus. The design mainly focuses on a metal uni-body design which comes with flat sides which helps to hold the phone in a comfortable. All the buttons on the phone have been placed on the right side of the phone. The power button has texture so that it could be easily recognized. The headphone port has been placed on the top of the device while the USB Type-C port has been placed at the bottom. The USB Type-C can be used fully reversed. Type C cables are rare, so the user may have to take it around until it becomes a common one.
Display
The size of the display is 5.7 inches which is dominant on the front of the device. The front facing speaker has been placed on the bottom of the device. The resolution of the display is 2560 × 1440 and the display technology powering the smart device is Quad HD super AMOLED display which has been appearing in recent flagship devices. The display is able to produce saturated images which are a joy to view. The display is also able to produce vibrant colors as well as deep blacks and high contrast. The images produced by the display are sharp crisp and detailed and is very bright at the same time.
Processor
The power for the device is provided by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 which is capable of clocking speeds of up to 2 GHz. The graphics are powered by Adreno 430 GPU. This is the reason why this device is so powerful and able to perform well.
Storage
The device comes with 32 GB built in storage but, unfortunately, does not support expandable storage. There are also 64 GB, 128 GB variants too with the same device.
Camera
The rear camera comes with a resolution of 12.3 MP, which comes with 1.5 microns to capture more light. The sensor size is bigger than the ones found on many Android phones in the market but, unfortunately, it does not provide for optical image stabilization for blur-free captures. The ability to capture more light will ensure low light imagery to be great. Not only the low light imagery but also the image quality overall has seen a vast improvement with this device when compared with its earlier versions. A downside of the device is the lack of controls on the device. Looking at the videography features, the device is able to capture 4K and slow motion capture at 720p.
Memory
The memory on the device is 3GB, which is ample for multitasking, and quick response of apps without any type of lag.
Operating System
When the hardware and the software are optimized, any smart device will become a formidable opponent to beat.
Audio
The front of the device comes with the dual front speaker which is capable of producing great sounds. The speaker are able to produce loud sounds when compared to many similar speakers in the market.
Battery Life
With a large battery capacity coupled with the Android Marshmallow 6.0, power saving mode is a great boost on the battery side of the device. The battery capacity of the device is 3450 mAh. There is also a new power saving feature which comes with the device known as Doze, which is believed to save power by putting applications to sleep while not in use. This will ensure that the power drawn from the battery will come to a mere standstill causing it to last for a longer period. The device will be able to last for two full days when in moderate use. The device is also able to support quick charge which is another plus.
Additional/ Special Features
Gaming on the device is also a great experience for the user as it is backed by a great processor, a fabulous display, and dual front speaker to produce clear sounds. The device this times comes with a fingerprint scanner to secure the device even further. The fingerprint scanner has become a built-in feature with Android Marshmallow 6.0. The fingerprint scanner is easy to setup, and it can also be used to secure Android Pay as well. The quality of the phone calls is also up to mark. The Google Nexus P is also compatible with many carriers in the US which is a convenience for users.
