Main Difference – Exynos 8 octa 8890 vs Exynos 7 octa 7420
The main difference between Samsung Exynos 8 octa 8890 and Exynos 7 octa 7420 is, Exynos 8 octa 8890 comes with custom-built cores which are believed to improve the performance of the System on Chip (SoC). The new chip is also integrated with a modem which is built for faster bandwidths. The Exynos 8 octa 8890 is the chip which is expected to come with the next main flagship of Samsung which is hopefully the Samsung Galaxy S7. Let us take a look at both the chips and get to know what is the main difference between them.
Exynos 8 Octa 8890 Review – Features and Specifications
In the recent few weeks, there were many rumors regarding the new Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890 processor, which made many of us impatient in order to see the specification it would contain. The Exynos 8 Octa core’s predecessor, the Exynos 7 Octa 7420 itself was a remarkable processor which powered the Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note 5, and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Even though the Exynos 7 Octa 7420 is a great processor, the next in line processor can be expected to be even better, and Samsung has officially announced it recently.
Architecture
The architecture that is used to build this processor is the 64-bit octa-core silicon which is the same as its predecessor.
Manufacturing Process
The Exynos 8 Octa 8890 is built using 14 nm FinFET manufacturing process. Samsung has yet to reveal if it is a Low Power Early or Low Power Plus.
Custom Cores
The interesting part of the chipset is, it’s the first to come with a CPU that has custom made cores. These custom cores are arranged in the big.LITTLE arrangement where the cores operate mainly targeting performance. These cores have been built based on the 64 bit ARM v 8 architecture. These core have been named mongoose or, in short M1. The other four cores are the Cortex A53, which work in tandem with the customs cores thanks to the multi-processing feature available with the chipset.
Performance and Efficiency
The custom cores coupled with the four Cortex 53 processors has a performance boost of 30% which is exceptional and a power efficiency which is 10 % more than the Exynos 7 Octa 7420. In all aspects, it seems that the new processor is better in all departments when compared with its predecessor
Integrity
The Exynos 8 Octa 8890 combines the modem and the processor on a single chip which makes it the first high-end chip produced by Samsung with this feature.
Bandwidth
The new chip is able to support LTE Rel 12, Cat 12/13 modem which is expected to support super-fast bandwidth speeds. The powerhouse is expected to support download speeds of up to 600Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps which is impressive.
Exynos 7 Octa 7420 Review – Features and Specifications
The Exynos 7 Octa 7420 was an important turning point for Samsung as the flagship devices for 2015, the Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, were powered by these processors. The previous models came with the Qualcomm-made processors, but now Samsung has made it’s very own processor to power its devices. This edition of Samsung processors was able to beat its SoC by a long way due to its design and enhancements. The main reason for this is the 14nm FinFET technology used in the chipset. As Apple has been making its own Soc, Samsung has taken a leaf out of Apple’s book and is trying to take advantage of the SoC in a similar manner. This new chip is a very powerful SoC, which packs a punch when its comes to the processing power provided for the smartphone.
Architecture
The chipset has been built upon the 64-bit architecture which comes with an octa-core processing unit. The unit uses the ARMv8 instruction set in the execution process inside the unit itself.
Cores
The system on chip comes with four Cortex A57, which are capable of clocking a speed of 2.1 GHz and another four cores which can clock a speed of 1.5 GHz. These two sets of cores which are known as clusters will switch to each other in a dynamic manner in accordance with the load they are to handle.
Processing Power and Efficiency
From a chipset point of view, the norm is smaller the better. With the use of 14nm FinFET technology, Samsung says the chipset will be able to have a 35 % increase in energy efficiency, 20% increase in performance and 30% improvement in productivity when compared with the chipsets that have used 20nm technology. By packing more and more transistor on the chip, the CPU will get faster. This is the same principle that has been used in the 14nm FinFET technology, making the processing power and processing speed of the CPU improve drastically.
Graphical Processing Unit
The Exynos 7420 chipset also comes with the Mali-T760 MP8 GPU, which is an improved version of the Mali-T760 MP6, which accompanied the Exynos 5433-the chip on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The special feature of this GPU is that the same 14 nm FinFET, which has been used in the manufacturing of the processor, is used on this chip as well. The maximum clocking speed that can be supported by this GPU stands at 772 MHz, which will provide improved performance. This GPU is also built in with power saving features as well as minimized image, texture bandwidths. The supported graphics API are namely Open GL ES, Open CL and Direct 3D 11.1.
Battery Life
Samsung has targeted power efficiency which will extend the battery life of the smartphone. For this reason, the CPU and GPU have been designed with power saving in mind. UFS 2.0 flash memory is also a feature that is power efficient which will further extend the battery life.
