Samsung recently unveiled a trio of Samsung Galaxy A series phones which came with some notable upgrades in order to outperform the competition. Notable upgrades would be the upgraded cameras, higher resolution displays, and Samsung Pay, which comes with the Samsung Galaxy A5 model. The main difference between Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2016) is that Galaxy A3 is smaller and lighter than Galaxy A5.

The main aim of the release of these models is to compete well with its rivals like Huawei and Xiaomi. This is also another attempt of Samsung to target budget customers. Huawei and Xiaomi have gained momentum by targeting budget phones and are only behind Samsung and Apple in the smartphone market. The previous versions of the same models were powered using LCD display panels. This version uses AMOLED displays for a brighter and colorful display.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) – Features and Specifications

The Samsung Galaxy A’s second generation device was announced early this December. It will be initially released in mid-December in China and will expand into the global market afterward. The design and the hardware have been improved compared with its predecessor. The new smartphone also comes with an integrated fingerprint scanner which provides additional security.

Design

The phone is designed similar to Samsung Galaxy S6, which is made up of metal and glass. The bezels on the sides of the phone have become narrower to provide more display space.

Dimension

The dimensions of the phone are equivalent to 144.80 x 71.00 x 7.30mm, and the weight of the smartphone is 155g.

Display

The diagonal size of the display stands at 5.2 inches, and the supported resolution of the display is full HD at 1080 X 1920 pixels. The display is powered by AMOLED technology which is considered to be one of the best displays in the current market. The pixel density on the display stands at 424ppi, which will provide clear and crisp images. The display size has increased due to the narrower bezels without increasing the overall size of the smartphone.

Performance

The power under the hood is provided by an octa-core processor which is capable of clocking a speed of 1.6 GHz. The memory on the device is 2GB, which is ample space for multitasking.

Storage

The built-in storage that come with the device is only 16 GB, which is not sufficient, so the option to plug in a micro SD card is available which can provide a capacity of up to 128 GB when needed.

Camera

The rear camera of the device stands at 13 megapixels, and the front-facing camera stands at 5 megapixels, which is exceptional for selfies. This ensures that the images captured by the device will be clear and colorful. The rear camera is also supported by optical image stabilization which enables the camera to avoid blurry photos. This feature is also helpful in capturing images in low light conditions.

Battery Capacity

The battery capacity of the device stands at 2900 mAh which enables it to last throughout the day. The nonremovable battery is another notable feature. 

Connectivity

Dimension

The dimensions of the phone are 134.50 x 65.20 x 7.30 and the weight of the phone stands at 132 g. The thickness of the Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 are all similar at 7.3mm.

Display

If we are to compare the Samsung Galaxy A3 with its predecessor, the display can be considered a major upgrade. The previous version had a QHD panel whereas the new panel comes with a super AMOLED display which is a 720p resolution display. The size of the display stands at 4.7 inches.

Performance

The processor powering the device is a Quad core processor which is capable of clocking speeds of up to 1.5 GHz. The memory that comes with the device stands at 1.5 GB of RAM.

Storage

The built-in storage of the device stands at 16 GB, which can be further expanded to up to 128 GB with the use of a microSD card.

Camera

The rear camera resolution stands at 13 megapixels and will provide a clean and clear image whereas the front camera supports a resolution of 5 megapixels which is great for selfies.

Battery Capacity

The battery capacity of the device stands at 2300mAh which is 400mAh lower than that of the Samsung Galaxy A5. But due to the smaller size of the smart device, it could last the whole day without any issues. The battery is non-removable which could prove to be a drawback for some users. 

Connectivity

Dimensions and Weight

Samsung Galaxy A5 dimensions are 144.8 x 71 x 7.3 mm and the weight of the device is 155g.

Samsung Galaxy A3 dimensions are 134.5 x 65.2 x 7.3 mm and the weight of the device is 132 g.

The smaller size of the Samsung Galaxy A3 makes it weigh less than the Samsung Galaxy A5.

Display

Samsung Galaxy A5’s display stands at 5.2 inches, resolution 1080p and the pixel density of the display stands at 424 ppi.

Samsung Galaxy A3’s display stands at 4.7 inches, resolution 720p and the pixel density of the display stands at 312 ppi.

The display  is a major difference between both devices. The Samsung Galaxy A3 has a smaller display with less resolution and size. The downgrade on the display will make the Samsung Galaxy A3 more affordable than the Samsung Galaxy A5.

Battery Capacity

Samsung Galaxy A5 has a battery capacity of 2900mAh.

Samsung Galaxy A3 has a battery capacity of 2300mAh.

The battery  Capacity of the Samsung Galaxy A5 is high, but both devices will be able to last throughout the day due to the displays and their resolutions.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy A5 comes with an Octa-core, 1600 MHz, a 64-bit processor which comes with 2GB memory.

Samsung Galaxy A3 comes with a  Quad-core, 1500 MHz processor which comes with 1.5 GB memory.

The memory of the Samsung Galaxy A3 is less but from a smartphone point of view it may not be much of a difference.

Features

Samsung Galaxy A5 is one of the first non-flagship phones which support Samsung Pay.

Samsung Galaxy A3 does not support Samsung Pay.                                                          

Samsung Galaxy A3 vs A5 (2016) –  Summary

Both the devices can be considered an upgrade from its predecessors, and seem to be great value for money phones. The AMOLED display was only known to come in high-end  phones which were hard to reach for the budget consumer. But with the arrival of the A series phones, that has changed. The cameras on both the devices which come with optical Image stabilization is also an important upgrade.
