Srinagar is yet not connected with important Indian cities through direct trains. The same is the case with Delhi, the Indian capital. You cannot hope to reach Srinagar from Delhi by taking a single train as most of the trains take you to Jammu, which lies in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. There is a rail route that is under construction, but a part of this is operational. This route allows you to take trains (2) from Delhi and reach Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. From Udhampur, you have to take a bus to reach Banihal and then catch a train again to reach Srinagar. This is an arrangement that has been done by Indian railways to make it easy for tourists to arrive in Srinagar through train. This is a rail cum road service, and you take a single ticket to cover the entire journey.

The facility was thrown open for public on July 5, 2014

This rail cum road service has been started on July 5 this year. This rail and bus connectivity allow passengers to reach Srinagar from Delhi by train on a single ticket though they have to get down on Udhampur and take buses arranged by railways to reach Banihal in between their journey. You only travel by bus from Udhampur to Banihal. From Banihal, passengers are provided seats in a special Diesel Electric Multiple Unit called DEMU.

What are the charges for this rail cum road journey?

For the road journey from Banihal and Udhampur, passengers are charged Rupees 260 per person. For the rest of the train journey between Delhi and Srinagar, railways charge only Rupees 400 per person for sleeper class. The fare for 3rd AC is Rupees 970 while it is Rupees 1370 for 2nd AC. The name of the train from Delhi to Udhampur is Uttar Sampark Kranti Express. It leaves Delhi at 8:50 PM and reaches Udhampur next morning at 8:05 AM. The number of this train is 12445. The bus service from Udhampur to Banihal departs at 8:45 and arrives in Udhampur at 2 PM. Here, you have to board the DEMU number 74627 at 2:50PM and it arrives in Srinagar at 4:55 PM.
