What is the Difference Between Couchbase and MongoDB

The main difference between Couchbase and MongoDB is that in Couchbase, the data is written in multiple data files in an append-only manner while MongoDB stores data into collections of Binary encoded JavaScript Object Notation or BJSON documents.

Big data refers to a large amount of data that cannot be stored and manipulated using traditional DBMS. Big data has three main properties: volume, velocity and variety. Here, the volume refers to the amount of data, velocity refers to the generation of the speed of data, and variety refers to the data type. The alternative to storing big data is to use non-relational databases (NoSQL). Couchbase and MongoDB are two such NoSQL databases.

Difference Between Couchbase and MongoDB - Comparison Summary

What is Couchbase

Couchbase is an open source, distributed multi-model NoSQL document-oriented database. It allows multiple users to access it at the same time. The user can perform various operations, such as creating, storing, retrieving, aggregating, manipulating, and presenting data in this database. Couchbase server provides key value or JSON document access with low latency and high sustained throughput. It is capable of clustering it from a single machine to a set of multiple machines. Furthermore, the Couchbase server provides client protocol compatibility with Memcached.

Difference Between Couchbase and MongoDB

In overall, Couchbase helps in developing and deploying web, mobile and Internet of Things based application. Large popular companies such as Cisco and AOL use Couchbase server.

What is MongoDB

MongoDB is a cross-platform, document-oriented database. It stores data in a form similar to JSON documents with a schema. MongoDB document is a set of key-value pairs while a collection is a set of documents. A document within a collection contains different fields. Content and size of a document can change from one document to another. Thus, it results in MongoDB having no schema.

Main Difference - Couchbase vs MongoDB

Another advantage of using MongoDB is that there are no complex joint operations in MongoDB. Also, it provides fast data accessing capabilities. Furthermore, the programmer can use document-based query language to execute dynamic queries on the database.

Difference Between Couchbase and MongoDB

Definition

Couchbase or Couchbase Server is an open source, distributed, multimode NoSQL document-oriented database that is optimized for interactive applications. On the other hand, MongoDB is a cross-platform, document-oriented database program. Thus, this is the basic difference between Couchbase and MongoDB.

Developer

Couchbase Inc. developed Couchbase, whereas MongoDB Inc developed MongoDB.

Written In

Moreover, Couchbase was written in C++, Erlang, C and Go while MongoDB was written in C++, Go, JavaScript and Python.

Installation and Configuration

Furthermore, Couchbase contains an integrated admin console and configures everything in a single place, whereas MongoDB follows the master-slave principle and requires more manual configurations. Hence, this is also a difference between Couchbase and MongoDB.

Structure and Format

In Couchbase, the data is written in multiple data files in an append-only manner while MongoDB stores data into collections of Binary encoded JavaScript Object Notation or BJSON documents. Above all, this is the main difference between Couchbase and MongoDB.

Memory

Also, memory is another difference between Couchbase and MongoDB. Couchbase uses one of the high-performance caches and avoids the requirement of external cache while MongoDB requires the use of third-party caches to handle more users and to support scalability.

Maintenance

In Couchbbase, the user can perform maintenance tasks using tools such as Web UI, Command-line Interface (CLI) or REST API while MongoDB usually supports only CLI tools for maintenance, but sometimes it is possible to use third part UI tools.

Supported Languages

Besides, Couchbase supports programming languages such as C, Go, Java, JavaScript, Perl, Python, Ruby, etc. whereas MongoDB supports programming languages such as C, C#, C++, Java, JavaScript, Lisp, Perl, PHP, etc. This is also a difference between Couchbase and MongoDB.

Conclusion

In overall, Couchbase and MongoDB are two NoSQL databases. MongoDB supports more programming languages than MongoDB. The main difference between Couchbase and MongoDB is that in Couchbase, the data is written in multiple data files in an append-only manner while MongoDB stores data into collections of Binary encoded JavaScript Object Notation or BJSON documents.
