What is eLearning

Electronic learning or eLearning is the process of learning and teaching via electronic media. eLearning occurs through the internet, where students can access learning materials online at any time and any place. There are two main types of eLearning as synchronous learning and asynchronous learning. Synchronous learning refers to learning that occurs in real-time, both instructor and students interacting at the same time. This happens through platforms such as chatrooms, Skype and virtual classrooms. Asynchronous learning, on the other hand, can be carried out online or offline. It involves coursework delivered by platforms like email, forums, blogs, and discussion boards. This allows students a chance at self-paced learning.

Furthermore, there are both advantages and disadvantages to eLearning. Some of its advantages are that it removes geographical obstacles, allow students to choose their own pace and learning environment, and saves money. Since students do not have to attend traditional classrooms regularly, they also have the chance to work while learning. However, there are some drawbacks in eLearning too. It can affect the communication skills of students, cause self-isolation and increase the risk of cheating during exams.

What is mLearning

Mobile learning or m-learning is learning through mobile devices. This includes handheld devices like tablets and smartphones. M-learning mainly focuses on the mobility of learners while interacting with portable technologies. The main advantage of m-learning is that it is accessible from virtually anywhere. Sharing is almost immediate among everyone using the same content, leading to the reception of instant feedback and tips.

M-learning courses are generally designed for simple screens and simple navigation. Therefore, it doesn’t involve detailed information or complex graphics. Information is arranged in smaller modules, usually containing one major idea per screen. Learners can access different types of content through m-learning, including videos, images, and audio files. Moreover, the learning duration of a module is also short, typically ranging between 3 to 10 minutes. Although there is a distinct difference between e-learning and m-learning, m-learning can be incorporated into e-learning.

Difference Between eLearning and mLearning

Definition

eLearning is a form of education where learning and teaching occur via the internet using electronic devices, while mLearning is a form of learning and teaching that involves mobile devices.

Devices and OSs

Since eLearning occurs through PCs and laptops, it involves operating systems like Windows, Linux and Mac. In contrast, mLearning occurs through mobile devices like smartphones and tablets and involves OSs like iOS and Android.

Design of Courses

eLearning courses can use complex and larger designs and modules, while mLearning courses should not involve detailed information or complex graphics. Moreover, mLearning should be designed with simple screens and simple navigation.  

Learning Duration

Moreover, courses or modules in eLearning are shorter than those in mLearning. The latter usually have courses that range from 3-10 minutes.

Purpose

eLearning teaches students specific skills or impart in-depth knowledge on a specific field or topic while mLearning supply learners concise pieces of information that can be accessed on the go.

In brief, eLearning takes place through laptops and desktops, while mLearning takes place through mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Based on this difference in platforms, there is a difference in their content and structure, as well. Overall, both have their own pros and cons.
