What is the Difference Between Internet of Things and Internet of Everything

The main difference between Internet of Things and Internet of Everything is that in the Internet of Things, the communication occurs between Machine to Machine while, in the Internet of Everything, the communication occurs between Machine to Machine (M2M), Machine to People (M2P), and technology-assisted people to people (P2P).

Technology is rapidly developing in today’s world. Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Everything (IoE) are two such rapid developments. Both of them help to increase productivity, accuracy and help to improve the quality of life. Generally, IoT systems are capable of monitoring themselves automatically, and they can respond to the changes and perform tasks without any human involvement. On the other hand, IoE is an extended version of IoT that supports M2P, P2P other than M2M.

Difference Between Internet of Things and Internet of Everything - Comparison Summary

What is Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology that allows computing devices, digital and mechanical systems to exchange data over a network without requiring interactions with humans.

Difference Between Internet of Things and Internet of Everything

IoT ecosystems contain web-enabled smart devices. These devices have embedded processors, sensors, and communication hardware that collect data from the environment. Subsequently, the collected data are sent to the cloud where the IoT gateways or similar edge devices analyze these data. In some cases, the devices may also communicate with related other devices to analyse the data. Thus, it is important to have good connectivity and communication protocols for communication.

IoT has various applications. For example, computers, smartphones, and mobile devices can remotely control the electronic devices in a smart home. Furthermore, this application also extends to automobiles, medicine, telecommunication, manufacturing, agriculture, and many other fields. Besides, there are also complex IoT applications such as smart cities, smart buildings, traffic monitoring systems, and energy management systems.

In overall, the IoT helps in increasing efficiency, improving business processes, understanding customers and helps in making decisions to improve profits. However, in all these applications, maintaining the security of the data is very vital as IoT highly depends on exchanging data through the network.

What is Internet of Everything

Internet of Everything (IoE) is a technology that extends the Internet of Things (IoT). It emphasizes on the machine to machine (M2M) communication. Furthermore, IoE is associated with complex systems involving people and processes.

Cisco developed the idea of the Internet of Everything. It defines IoE as the intelligent connection of people, processes, data, and things. In IoE, there is communication between Machine to Machine (M2M), Machine to People (M2P), and technology-assisted people to people (P2P) interactions. In overall, it is an extended version of IoT.

Difference Between Internet of Things and Internet of Everything

Definition

IoT is the network of physical devices and items embedded with electronics to enable connectivity and exchange data. On the other hand, IoE is a broader concept than the Internet of Things; we can define it as the intelligent connection of people, processes, data, and things. Hence, this explains the difference between IoT and IoE.

Communication

The main difference between IoT and IoE is the communication link. In IoT, the communication occurs between Machine to Machine whereas, in IoE, the communication occurs between Machine to Machine (M2M), Machine to People (M2P), and technology-assisted people to people (P2P).

Complexity

Moreover, complexity is another difference between IoT and IoE. That is; IoT is less complex than IoE.

Conclusion

The main difference between Internet of Things and Internet of Everything is that in IoT, the communication occurs between Machine to Machine while in IoE, the communication occurs between Machine to Machine (M2M), Machine to People (M2P), and technology-assisted people to people (P2P). In brief, IoE is a broader concept than IoT.
