But only a few of these trees can produce oud. For oud to form, the tree’s heartwood has to be infected by a special fungus. This rare process makes a resin with a deep, earthy smell.

Since only about 2% of these trees make oud, it’s very rare and costly. To get the oil, the resin-filled wood is either distilled or melted down. Often called “liquid gold,” oud can cost up to $5,000 per pound. 

What is Musk
