What is Oxygen Debt

Oxygen debt is the oxygen deficiency of the body occurring in strenuous physical activity. Therefore, it is the extra oxygen needed by the body after exercise. Importantly, the extra oxygen reconverts the lactic acid build-up in muscles because anaerobic conditions induce the lactic acid formation in muscles from glucose. The lactic acid formation also produces ATP and creatinine phosphate in muscles. Therefore, oxygen is required after exercising for the recovery of muscles.

Furthermore, oxygen debt is also called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. It is the increased rate of oxygen intake after strenuous exercises. In the recovery, the oxygen processes the body to the resting stage, adapting it to the exercise just performed. It helps with hormonal balance, cellular repair, replenishment of fuel stores, innervation, and anabolism. Also, it replenishes the phosphagen system. Additionally, it allows aerobic respiration and produces ATP, and this ATP donates phosphate groups to creatine. It occurs until the creatine levels are back to normal. Further, it is important to fuel the body’s increased metabolism during exercise. 

What is Oxygen Deficit

Oxygen deficit is the difference between the body’s oxygen intake in the early stages of exercise and the oxygen intake in the steady state of exercise. It occurs when the body’s oxygen consumption exceeds the intake of oxygen. When the body triggers oxygen deficiency, it will work to replenish the deficiency of oxygen. The time taken for the replenishment is the recovery period, and during the recovery period, oxygen consumption increases.

For example, a person requires 1.5 liters of oxygen to perform a physical function. However, the intake of oxygen during the hour is 1.0 liter. Therefore, the oxygen deficit is 0.5 liters per hour. If the total exercise occurs for four hours, the oxygen deficit is 2 liters.
