The main difference between Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 and 810 is that Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 has faster 8 cores which clock a maximum speed of 2.5 GHz whereas the Snapdragon 808 comes with 6 cores which top a clocking speed of 2.0GHz. The other features included in the Snapdragon 810 processor are the ability to support USB 3.0 and a better Graphical Processing unit, which is able to support a better display resolution as well.
Many mobile devices in the market come with one of the above systems on chips, mostly the windows phones and the Android phones. Both these processors use the ARM architecture in designing the Qualcomm SoC. If we are to compare both Snapdragon 808 and Snapdragon 810, the latter is considered the pinnacle of all the chips designed by the company up to date.
The company had to ditch its own Krait cores in order give way to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 64 bit architecture ARM processors. It is also confirmed by company sources that a new Snapdragon 820 which will also come with the 64-bit architecture using 14nm technology, SoC will be released in 2016. As with its predecessors, the new processor will also inherit the custom Qualcomm cores which are KYRO. These cores will be produced by Samsung. Both Snapdragon 808 and Snapdragon 810 were introduced last year; the latter was released as a high-end version in comparison. But Snapdragon 810 has run into some problems in the recent past. The main accusation is that the processor is overheating when used to run in heavy environments. According to sources, this is said to be the main reason for LG G4 to opt for the Snapdragon 808 over Snapdragon 810. But other sources say that the decision was made long ago even before the issues with the Snapdragon 810 was recognized. Regardless of this issue, many latest smartphones use one of these processors.
Difference Between Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 and 810
Number of Cores
The Snapdragon 808 comes with 6 core or hexa cores.
The Snapdragon 810 comes with 8 cores or dual quad cores.
More cores mean the processor will be able to multi-task effectively. The cores will also be able to balance the load according to the complexness of the task.
The Snapdragon 808 comes with a clocking speed of 2.0 GHz.
The Snapdragon 810 comes with a clocking speed of 2.5 GHz
The clocking speed of the Snapdragon 810 is higher than the Snapdragon 808, which means the processing of data will be fast and responsiveness of the application will be faster too.
The Snapdragon 808 comes with dual ARM Cortex A57 microprocessor and quad ARM Cortex A53 microprocessor with 64-bit architecture.
The Snapdragon 810 comes with four ARM Cortex A57 microprocessors and four ARM Cortex A53 microprocessors with 64-bit architecture
The more cores on the Snapdragon 810 processor means faster processing will take place, but this may be very insignificant due to the fast processing speeds both processors process.
Graphical Processing Unit
The Snapdragon 808 comes with an Adreno 418, which supports OpenGL ES 3.1.
The Snapdragon 810 comes with Qualcomm Adreno 430, which clocks a speed of 500 MHz and supports DirectX 11.1, OpenCL 1.2 & OpenGL ES 3.0 APIs
The Snapdragon 810 is able to support additional API’s when compared with the Snapdragon 808.
The Snapdragon 808 does not support USB 3.0.
The Snapdragon 810 supports USB 3.0.
Supported Display Resolution
The Snapdragon 808 supports a display resolution of 2560 × 1600.
The Snapdragon 810 supports a display resolution of 2560 × 2048.
The Snapdragon 810 is able to support a higher resolution that the Snapdragon 808 counterpart.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 vs 810 – Summary
The difference between the two processors is not that significant. If both processors were used to complete light tasks like viewing emails and texting, there would not be much of a difference between the performance of the two processors.
If both processors were used in heavy gaming, viewing Ultra high definition content, the Snapdragon 810 would perform slightly better due to its improved graphics processor, which is claimed by Qualcomm to provide 30% better performance, but the battery will see a quicker drain due to the high power consumption by the Snapdragon 810 processor.
The Snapdragon 810 is also able to support USB 3.0 which is an additional feature. This will be beneficial in transferring data quickly between the computers, but this may only be significant if the user frequently connects his smartphone device and sync it with the computer. Otherwise, the USB 2.0 will do just fine for the normal user.
The phones that come with Snapdragon 808 will be cheaper compared with the phones that come with Snapdragon 810, which is a definite advantage.
The Snapdragon 810 has some better features according to the spec sheet, the 8 cores that come with the chip, USB 3.0 support, better performing GPU, better display resolution support are namely the important ones. If the phone user is using it for lightweight processing like email, the web, normal games and viewing standard videos, both processors will perform in the same way, and the difference would be insignificant. If the two smartphones with both processors were swapped, the user might not even know that two different processors are powering the device if light weight applications were being processed. It would not be ideal to choose the phone just only by referring to the processor as the difference between the performances of both the processors is very small. The user can freely choose the phone according to the design and other specifications it has to offer as well as the intended usage.
