What is Kuiper Belt
The Kuiper belt is a circumstellar disc occurring in the outer solar system. It extends from the orbit of Neptune at a distance from 30 AU to 50 AU. It is 20 times larger than the asteroid belt and massive 20-200 times in width. The Kuiper belt is a doughnut-shaped ring of ice. But as same as the asteroid belt, the Kuiper belt contains remnants and small bodies from the solar system’s formation. Most of the Kuiper belt contains frozen volatiles known as ice. Generally, these gases include methane, ammonia, and water. In comparison, the asteroid belt contains primarily rocks and metal. The Kuiper belt also contains dwarf planets, including Orcus, Quaoar, Pluto, Haumea, and Makemake. In addition, the Moons of some planets, including Neptune’s Triton and Saturn’s Phoebe originate from this region.
Furthermore, Dutch astronomer Gerard Kuiper was the first to discover the Kuiper belt. The Kuiper belt is a thousand times more distant and less spherical in comparison to the Oort cloud.
What is Oort Cloud
The Oort cloud is a theoretical concept of a cloud containing primarily icy planetesimals. It is supposed to surround the Sun at distances ranging from 2,000 to 200,000 AU. In addition, it has two regions; the inner Oort cloud and the outer Oort cloud. Normally, the inner Oort cloud or Hills cloud is disc-shaped, while the outer Oort cloud is spherical. Both regions lie beyond the heliosphere, the outermost atmospheric layer of the Sun. In addition, the Oort cloud occurs in the interstellar space.
Dutch astronomer Jan Oort discovered the Oort cloud in 1950. Moreover, in comparison to the Oort cloud, the Kuiper belt is a scattered disc. The outer boundary of the Oort cloud refers to the cosmographic boundary of the solar system. Furthermore, it is loosely bound to the Sun. Therefore, the gravitational pull can easily affect forming the Milky Way and passing stars. Therefore, it can dislodge comets from their orbitals.
