The three ketone bodies that are produced during the breakdown of fats are acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. These ketone bodies are transported through the blood to the tissues that need energy, such as the brain, skeletal muscles, and heart. When the ketone bodies reach tissues, they are converted back to acetyl CoA, which can enter Krebs’ cycle and be used to produce ATP.

However, during the period of fastening or low carbohydrate intake, the brain uses ketone bodies as an alternative fuel source. Ketolysis helps in weight loss, blood sugar control, brain function, athletic performance, and epilepsy. Ketolysis can also help regulate blood sugar levels by reducing the body’s reliance on glucose for energy.
